I can't imagine not using it for transport. I really want to make one of these, get a kit down to like two containers. I even found an old suitace in the attic when I got the Christmas decorations.
Did you notice the guy has the kit mic'd? Righteous!
I know a few people who have played kits like this.
For a while when I was in between homes I had a snare, snare case, harwware and cymbals so I used the snare case as a kick and it sounded petty damn good! If you mic it I think that a case or suitcase can be completely useable.
The advantage of the suitcase is you can fit more stuff. I would imagine that that kit all goes into the case, or at least I hope so!
I was just poking around the net and found several references to suitcase drums. I got thinking about a useable "el cheapo" practice kit that packed into 2 bags/cases. When I showed my wife the picture and told her what I had planed she just groaned! I said "At least it's cheap!"
There is a duo from UK called "The Two Timers" where the guy plays guitar and suitcase bass and the gal sings and plays a snare hanging on a strap.
I's also not high on the project list as the only place I play drums currently has a house kit. I have looked at suitcases at the Goodwill store though!
