there's a few people around that rework old cymbals. cutting them down, or re-tempering and re-hammering them, or shredding them into unique noisemakers. Most are kinda secretive and wont divulge their techniques, but you can find some chatter at sites like cymbalholic. i think they need to be clamp...

if you are not handy, a local metal shop guy could fabricate something for you. Think about a system that would just slide down onto and hang off of the rail using gravity. You wouldn't be able to adjust it much, but it would be fast to plop it on. Or, since these japanese drums are not super valubl...

keep an open mind about a smaller snare. I've been very happy with my 12 and 13 inch snares. All the techniques you are used to transfer over. I feel like i can get a " real " snare sound with these, and they hang off the main drum better. No issues with falling over. I just love not havin...

this is a 16 by 24 drum, right?

If so, you might want to consider a side snare.

I haven't been able to get a good snare sound out of a 16 inch cocktail, myself.

Also, if you hang stuff evenly around the drum, that helps with the balance.

cajons are cool, but personally, i get tired of playing bent over.
I like to be relaxed and be able to make eye contact with other musicians and /or audiance.

i reversed my dw5000 in about a half hour. I could do it again in 15 minutes. I would rate myself as 8/10 on the handy scale, if that means anything. You will need a set of allen wrenches and a pair of channel locks or slip pliers. Too bad metro crashed and burned, they were selling a reversed pedal...

http://cocktaildrum.com/rap/gallery2.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1397 Here's another setup with the 13 inch metal snare. I can also use any number of legs as needed. Too many drums mounted to one side of the main drum? No problem, just add another leg. Try setting up a snare on eith...

i posted up on the sf bay area list, but any medium sized metro area should have enough
beat up drums to scavenge.
Or, if you are out in the sticks, garage sale, flea market, pawn shop.
Or ebay, of course.

Ugly Relic Frankenkit

Instead of spending years tracking down the missing parts for a restoration on a vintage kit, and obsessing about perfection, I had a thought: why not make a kit ugly on purpose? Of course it had to be a certain KIND of ugly. This kit is also a nesting kit, and can be configured in any number of way...

cool.

thanks for the additional info.

maybe i'll start with making one leg with a caster and try it out.

by the way, is that the lp percussion trays you are using, or something else?

i would think a single caster would be unstable.

I think i'll try and make a tom leg with caster this week.

thanks so much for posting these photos. I've been curious about the whitneys for a long time. Its hard to find one to check out in person. this is the next best thing. Very ingenious design ideas. The build quality looks very good. One of the things i like about his esthetic is the streamlined look...
